Moving out, moving up.

Greetings!

Today is going to be a pretty crazy day, true-believers. Why's that, you ask? Well - today is my last friday in Eugene. Last night I tore down my recording studio out in my garage to pack up into my mom's car, and tonight I am having a going away rager at my old Eugene house. I am moving to Portland on monday to pursue my dream of being a big music mogul!

That's right.

Once in Portland I will finish up Testament's full length, continue work on the new Check'drecordings, work on Gnar Tapes and Shit, an awesome tape label that I am vice president of, make new Feather Headdress recordings, and in august I will be going on tour with White Fang.

I am currently sitting at the apartment of Your Funk playing some WoW. I am just dropping a line to you diligent readers to let you know about the progress on the new Check'd album, titled Epistemology. We are going to head into the new Zin studios in Eugene on Dec 5 to record some funky chunky beats, then were going to fly back to Portland where we will compose our floetry and interludes and what not, and then in the first week of january we will record our vocals, and hopefully be able to drop our shit in stores by this spring. Exciting?

Your Funk is back in town until January. He has been on the beautiful oceans of the world playing trumpet on a cruise ship, but he has returned (with a really nice watch) and is prepared to begin production on the next Check'd album, currently titled Epistomology. Expect big things, fans, because this album is looking like it will be off the hook.

Also currently in production is the hot new album from Feather Headdress, supreme beat making crew from Portland. Check out their MySpace for some previews and tell all of your friends.

last Friday evening
I was sitting there motionless
behind a wall of red taillights
there wasn’t even first gear
movement
as masses of exhaust fumes greyed the

I was well versed

the classical stations
refused to come in

and when they did
it was a stale
repetition of
standard and tiresome

I turned the radio
off.
a strange whirling began in my head
– it circled behind the forehead

went past the ears and around to the
back of the head then back
to the forehead

again.

I began to wonder
is this what happens when one goes
mad?
I considered getting out of my car.
I was in the so-called fast lane.
I could see myself out there
out of my car leaning against
the freeway divider
arms folded.
then I would slide down to a sitting
position
putting my head between my
legs.
I stayed in the car
bit my tongue
turned the radio back on
willed the whirling to
stop
as I wondered
if any of the others
had to battle

then the car ahead of

MOVED
a foot

I shifted to first gear . . .
there was MOVEMENT!
then I was back in neutral

we had moved from 7 to ten
feet.

hearing the world news
for the 7th time

So listen, turn off your computer (unless you're overthrowing the system somehow), go down on someone and do something constructive. If that isn't enough for your ambitious soul you could be spending your time trying to do shit like creating your own pirate radio, throwing benefit parties or playing in a band. "So then why aren't you, the pretentious preacher, doing all this?" you may ask. Why are you wasting time writing this? Its obvious, I'm drunk. This is not my computer. This is not my website. Boo! Local Label Turns Two
The voices lead the way

Check’d

Chris Uehlein says he heard voices growing up. They spoke outside of his bedroom; they sang from the attic. “Oh, my house was definitely haunted,” asserts the 20-year-old music student. He doesn’t know exactly what the ghosts were saying, but they must have howled some encouragement his way. A musician since his salad days, Uehlein had always aspired to support himself with his art, but he didn’t know how to break into the music industry. “So I decided to make the industry myself,” says the enterprising UO sophomore. With his friend Bryan Oliver and the motto “Fuck man, we can do that,” he started Haunted House Records, a fiercely independent label that holds radical politics and social consciousness near and dear to its DIY heart.

Initially, Haunted House revolved around Check’d, a politically driven experimental hip-hop group, and Spring Project, a metal band, of both of which Uehlein is a member. But what began as little more than a vanity project has evolved into a legitimate, up-and-coming label. In the last two years, Uehlein has doubled the roster (from two to four bands) and expanded his vision of Haunted House’s business model. “It’s not just music we want to put out,” says Uehlein. “It’s more of an art collective … I want to put out the stuff from the people I believe in, from graphic novels to poetry books to paintings.” Recently, the label has promoted a status quo-skewering collage artist named Fritz as well as “signed” (more mutual agreement than a contract) Testament, an MC out of Brooklyn, and the Alder St. All Stars, a radical bluegrass/honky-tonk group based out of the student-run Campbell Club co-op.

At the core of Haunted House Records is a subversive, DIY spirit that not only unites the label’s artists but also just makes sense financially. Uehlein cuts down on costs by making and producing nearly everything in-house. He records, mixes and masters most of the bands at his home studio, and he hand-makes all the packaging and promotional materials (from 100 percent recycled material, of course). It’s this self-sustainability and business savvy that has Uehlein thinking he could do this full-time for a very long time. Maybe those voices from his childhood home keep giving him good ideas, but he’s already planning to buy property in Portland and transform the label into an autarkic artist’s co-op. Hopefully, that house will be
haunted, too.

What's the buzz, true-believers?

I am just sitting here at the laundromat taking care of my long over due laundry situation - and in the vein of doing things long since overdue, I decided to post some Check'd news( I am delighted to find that the wireless here at the laundromat works better than at my apartment).

So what exactly is new with Check'd, you ask?

Well, not a whole bunch. But we are proud to announce that on June 6th, 2008, we will be having a show at the Campbell Club in Eugene, Oregon, to raise monies for Haunted House Records. These monies will be used to buy studio/live equipment and merchandise to sell for more monies, which will then be used to get our asses on the road. How rad is that? Speaking of merchandise, we are going to have shirts really soon. I know I keep saying that, but it's true this time! I will post as soon as print some.

Also, beloved member of the Check'd crew Testament has been hard at work creating his first (highly anticipated) solo release, which we plan to have out by the end of May.

Oregon Voice Review

In the most recent issue of the Oregon Voice there was a review of Project:Reconstruction written by Iris Bull. This is what she said:

"Political hip hop is not quite an accurate description of the sophisticated, whimsical lyrics of this troupe. The term gives no sense of the intricate musicality that Check’d weaves into its tracks. One of my personal favorites, “Imaginary Riot,” incorporates a feet-movin’, body-groovin’ trumpet solo melded together with a contagious clapping underlay, combined with a beat-popping keyboard and riot-inspiring vocals. “There’s gonna be a riot/A stampede/Throw your hands up/If you do agree with me/There’s no justice/No peace/No security/’Cause freedom ain’t free,” shouts the troupe, and frankly, I’m already on my feet.
Each song on this album seems to have come from my ADD-driven dreams: unique and ending on a different riff every time. “Non-Violent Fist,” “Wal-Mart on Fire,” and “Welcome to America” are excellent examples of Check’d mixing the musical equivalents of ranch and BBQ sauce, then dipping their deliciously crispy lyric-nuggets into their new creamy-sweet condiment. In “Wal-Mart on Fire,” Onegin puts it simply, “There’s famine and kids/Who would kill for a piece of/Jammin’ up bread/There’s workers in other countries /Who are better off dead/You know this country’s so wrecked/You know, if you ask me/ Earth should get itself Check’d.” I couldn’t agree more.
True to nonconformity, Check’d is a local gem that shouts out from beautiful Portland, OR. Icing on the cake? Their album’s cover is made from 100% recycled paper. For its mind-buzzing mellifluousness, powerful messages, and pleasing use of environmentally –friendly packaging, Check’d gets eight scrumptious nuggets out of ten."
